Boba Loca - Torrance, CA

Posted on Thursday 12 April 2007

Those squishy balls of tapioca goodness that we’ve come to know as boba, is heading downhill towards a been-there, done-that drinking trend. I’m the last one who should talk, considering I have been an avid boba fan since my first discovery 12 years ago at a restaurant near 99 Ranch in Focus plaza of Monterey Park. Yup, back then, us boba veterans had to nudge our fellow chinese-speaking friends to order us a boba lai cha, one flavor of boba, who knew this boba would evolve into thousands of flavors, textures, temperatures? Slush boba? Peppermint boba? Mini boba? This isn’t to say boba has come to an end, au contraire, I believe boba will survive a long life for fans all over the world. After all, when you’re thirsty and in the mood for something a little more fun than water, why not hit up a local boba shop to appease your craving?

We did just that today. But didn’t just settle for boba. We found a boba shop that serves up both, another up and coming trend. Frozen Yogurt Find of the day: Spoon and M0chi hit up the Boba Loca at 31757 W Carson St, Torrance 90501.

This location is particulary small and quaint, the owners are perhaps the nicest boba shop owners you’ll ever meet, and their boba and frozen yogurt are fresh! Torrance is known for its abundance of excellent Japanese restaurants, so if you happen to be in the area dining you might want to cap off your meal with a boba or froyo from this local boba shop.

The frozen yogurt offered is just plain, but they offer one of the best invented ingredients ever. The prized rice cake aka candied mochi. Yes, soft, pillowy, cakes of rice. If you’re familiar with Pinkberry, you know that rice cake is a popular topping. Piled on top of a cold frozen yogurt, the cushiony rice cakes are always a delectable touch. This boba loca not only offers rice cake that is just as good as Pinkberry’s, they also offer fresh fruits such as pineapple, strawberry, blueberry, and kiwi. Fruity pebbles are another bonus. Combine the crunchy cereal topping with a fruit, don’t forget the rice cakes, and behold. A frozen yogurt worth your taste buds.

I often stress quality over quantity, and this is definitely a mom and pop’s type of boba shop that focus on quality. Don’t expect any crazy flavors or 100’s of toppings here. Trust in the simplicity of their plain flavor, next to a small variety of fruits and candied toppings. The point is, you can walk away with a satisfying yogurt, and hopefully a smile on your face. It’s comfort froyo.
