Beachberries fans, rejoice! The popular froyo joint we’ve come to enjoy in Huntington Beach, has now opened its second location in the outskirts of Newport Beach/Costa Mesa.
1696 Newport Blvd, Ste B
Costa Mesa, CA 92628

Sitting in a tiny plaza right off busy Newport Blvd (off the 55) Beachberries sits right next to a Juice it Up. Hey, you can enjoy a blended juice and a froyo if you’re up for it!

We notice they tout their “Euro style” and “health” of their yogurt in front, and come to find out this location has only been open for a month and is still in the quasi-grand opening phase.

Oh my, all the colors! The interior of the store seems to pop out at you with a dashes of oranges and pinks. And like many other froyo stores, Beachberries also boasts modern pop-art furniture. Here they even have little cube-bench-like seats.

The menus are dolled up with a silhouette of a total California beach girl, so you get a feeling this would make any beach-goer a happy camper.

Right off the bat, we note Beachberries serves their froyo in plastic cups rather than the popular paper or Styrofoam versions. While this is cool, because the froyo looks cool and refreshing from the outside looking in - we wonder if this may have something to do with the melt-factor of the froyo. Let’s delve into this a little further by moving on to the froyo itself.
Beachberries only offers one flavor - plain, simple as that. At least you don’t have to spend time debating which flavor you want to go with. But spice up your froyo, of course, from a number of fresh fruit or dry toppings.

Pricing is standard - nothing surprising here. A plain small with no toppings will run you $2.50, one topping $3.45, 3 toppings = $4.25. The small is already a hefty 5 oz. but if your appetitte is ready for some froyo action, step it up to a medium 8 oz., or Large 14 oz. for a couple more $.
Beachberries also offers 3 types of yogurt smoothies at $3.95, and the Yogurt Bing which combines shaved ice with your froyo combo.
Today’s choice of topping: Small froyo with Strawberries.

The froyo tastes rather refreshing, you can find a little tartness to their recipe. I can’t quite put a finger on it, but Beachberries has a unique flavor of plain that reminds you of your first experience trying it at the first location in Huntington Beach. Is it comparable to the Red Mango’s, Ce’s, and Pinkberry’s of the world? I would still say not quite, but it has potential to be something quite unique on its own.
The consistency is extremely creamy, no iciness here. But we have to touch on the melt-factor. The froyo seemed to melt rather quickly - in less than 10 minutes, half of the small became a little bit of a soft-serve, melted mishmash. I was a little disappointed because I was hoping to enjoy it on my commute to the beach. Of course, keep in mind, the day was 80 degrees+, you can’t expect froyo to last forever.
We recommend you hang out at the store, enjoy the colorful environment, and the friendly staff. One last thing to note, the parking lot is on the smaller side, and this location lies on a large street with heavy traffic, but the good news is, you’re still able to pull in and find a spot right in front.
If you’re headed towards the beach, and stopping by Beachberries, give us your take!
