Greetings from the land of the rising sun!  For those who reside in or visit Japan, you can get your frozen yogurt fix in the heart of Kyoto, the city where old meets new.  And for our long-time readers, you may remember we covered the sno:la at the Beverly Hills location. It’s the same blueprint, same ecologically and socially responsible mission, just 5,690 miles away.

Their yogurt gets a thumbs up from us, with delectable flavors ranging from dulce de leche to pomegranate.  Their yogurt does not contain white sugar, promoting a healthier and tarter aftertaste, and many of their toppings are organic.  Toppings include, but are not limited to, sauces such as sour cherry sauce, mango sauce, and nato de coco & aloe vera, choclates such as chocolate chips, oreo cookie crumbs, and unique to japan “wheat chocolate”, fresh nuts like slivered almonds, pistachios, hazelnut crisps, and dry selections such as organic graham crackers, flaky wafers, and a Japan exclusive, brown rice flakes.

The store itself is located on one of the main large streets of Kyoto, in an easy-to-spot corner location.  This sno:la is 3-stories, the first story where you order, and the 2nd and 3rd to hang out and enjoy your frozen yogurt.  The store is very clean, modern, and true to their ecological story, the seats are constucted of recyclable and biodegradable cardboard.  Containers and cups are also made from environmentally friendly sugar cane, soy ink, and light materials.

In an age where we are figuring out ways to become ecologically responsible and embracing the go-green mentality, it’s refreshing to see sno:la to not only provide tasty frozen yogurt, but also proactive in their eco-missions.

From a variety of nuts, fruits, candies, cookies, you really can’t complain.  Some of the unique toppings they serve here include frosted animal cookies to vanilla wafers.  Each topping costs 95 cents to add in so choose wisely.   It’s hard to go wrong, but your first visit may be a little overwhelming with such a long laundry list of toppings to choose from.

The term toppings is misleading here, as they don’t actually “top” your frozen yogurt, but are mixed in on a cold slab, a-la-Cold-Stone-Creamery style.  Delightful and fun servers behind the counter give you excellent service, as they offer samples as you’re moving up in line.  When your masterpiece is ready to go, they even ask you for a taste-test to make sure it’s to your liking.

The frozen yogurt itself is a soft, creamy, smooth texture.  We like that they offer 6 different frozen yogurt flavors per day.  Luckily, a peek at their website daily shows you what new flavors are in store each day.  While we were giddy from the thought of anything from Twix Cookie Bar to Root Beer Float, we were smitten with the Rocky Road combination, which actually comes with pre-mixed in toppings.  The rocky road is amazingly smooth, and does not have an overbearing chocolate taste to it, which makes it that much more enjoyable.  Prices range by cup size (4 sizes), and toppings are 95 cents each.

The store is inviting because of the workers’ chipper vibe, imagine dancing to the beat of an Michael Jackson classic, but the store itself is not quite catered for sitting down.  There is a small bench along the wall but not quite designated for those who are looking to hang out with their friends/family.  It’s definitely for yogurt-getters on the go, while perusing Old Town Pasadena, why not satiate that yogurt craving?  There is a long line almost always, but as they always say, good things are usually worth the wait.  This is no exception.
